Translation is one of the various branches of learning and it has become an important discipline that encompasses separate body of Knowledge. Newmark considers translation as '' A craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message or statement in one language into another language ''. The need for translation has existed since immemorial. Translating important literary works from one language into others has contributed significantly to the development of international culture. Particular social forms and cultural norms and ideas have constantly been spreading an assimilating into other cultures by the way of translation. This paper attempts to examine the status of Translation in this Century. It is also intended to help budding translators to understand the current status of the field of translation and to suggest ways and means for them to prepare themselves in advance for their professional task. No one can down play the crucial role played by the translators in serving as a bridge between languages thereby coming to the rescue of monolingual speakers. That is why translation is viewed as a means to reinforce international and intercultural relationship.

இயற்கையைக்குறித்தும் அதன் அங்கங்களான தாவரங்கள் விலங்குகள் நீர்நிலைகளைக் குறித்தும் எழுதப்படாத தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களே அன்றும் இன்றும் இல்லை எனலாம். இந்த நவீன மகாபாரத நாவலும் இவ்வாறே பல்வேறுபட்ட தாவரங்களை சரியான அறிவியல் அடிப்படையில் தெரிவிக்கிறது.. பலநூறு தகவல்கள் தாவரவியல் அடிப்படையில் வெண்முரசில் சொல்லபப்ட்டிருப்பினும் இக்கட்டுரையில் மிகசிறந்த சில உதாரணங்களே எடுத்துக்காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. தற்போது வெளிவந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் மாமலர் எனும் பதிமூன்றாவது நாவல் வரிசையும் ஆயிரம் இதழ் கொண்ட சொளகந்திக மலரினை பீமன் தேடிக்கண்டடைவதை குறித்தே பேசுவது வெண்முரசின் இன்னொரு சிறப்பு.

இலக்கியங்கள் நிலைபேறுடைய மானிட மதிப்புகளையும் வாழ்வியல் விழுமியங்களையும் விண்டுரைத்து மானுட வெற்றிக்கு வழிவகுக்கின்றன.  அறிவுறுத்தல், இன்புறுத்தல், மொழித்திறன் மிகுத்தல், பண்பாட்டுக் காப்பு.  பொழுதுபோக்கு ஆகிய படைப்பு நோக்கங்களுள், தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களில் அறிவூட்டல் பண்பு மேலோங்கிக் கோலோச்சுதல் வெளிப்படை. வாழ்வியல் விழுமங்களை விண்டுரைப்பதை முதன்மை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருப்பினும், இலக்கிய உத்திகளும் நடையியல் நுட்பங்களும் சொல்லாட்சிச் செறிவும் திருக்குறளில் காணப்படுகின்றன.   அற இலக்கியமான திருக்குறள் மொழி மற்றும் இலக்கியத் தொழில்நுட்பத்தைச் செவ்வனே கையாண்டு படைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. காலப் பழமையாலும் திருக்குறளின் இலக்கண / தொடர் அமைப்பு நுட்பங்களாலும் ஆர்வமுள்ள அன்பர்களால் கூடச் சில குறட்பாக்களுக்கு எளிமையாகப் பொருளுணர இயல்வதில்லை. குறட்பாக்களை முறையாகவும் முழுமையாகவும் உணர்ந்துகொண்டால் தான் படைப்பின் பெருமையும் விளம்பப்படுகின்ற விழுமியத்தின் சால்பும் தெளிவாகி, அறநெறியைப் பின்பற்றும்  உள்ளார்வம் மக்களிடம் பிறக்கும்.
