இளங்கோவடிகளால் இயற்றப்பட்ட சிலப்பதிகாரம் தமிழரின் பழந்தமிழ் வாழ்வியலை எடுத்துரைக்கும் சிறந்த காப்பியமாகும். இக்காப்பியத்தில் இடம்பெறும் கண்ணகி கோவலன் வாழ்க்கை, புகார், மதுரை, வஞ்சி ஆகிய நகரங்களின் சமூகச் சூழல் வழியாக அக்கால மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறைகள் வெளிப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. விருந்தோம்பல், கற்பு, அறம், நீதி, ஈகை, குடும்ப உறவு, தொழில், வணிகம், கலை, சமயம், அரசாட்சி போன்ற பல்வேறு வாழ்வியல் கூறுகளைச் சிலப்பதிகாரம் எடுத்துக்காட்டுகிறது. இவ்வாய்வு, காப்பியத்தில் இடம்பெறும் நிகழ்வுகளின் அடிப்படையில் தமிழர்களின் வாழ்வியல் நெறிகளை ஆராய்ந்து, அவை இன்றைய சமூகத்திற்கும் வழங்கும்

Abstract
Silappathikaram*, authored by Ilango Adigal, is a magnificent epic that portrays the traditional way of life of the Tamil people. The lifestyles of the people of that era are revealed through the lives of the protagonists, Kannagi and Kovalan, and the social environments of the cities of Puhar, Madurai, and Vanchi. The epic highlights various aspects of life, such as hospitality, chastity, righteousness, justice, generosity, family relationships, occupations, trade, arts, religion, and governance. This study examines the Tamil way of life based on the events depicted in the epic and articulates the ethical values it offers to contemporary society
