The Domestic Life Described by Valluvar

Abstract
To guide one's way of life, Thiruvalluvar delineates the principles of domestic life across twenty chapters under the section titled *Illaraviyal* (The Ethics of Domestic Life). Valluvar systematically outlines the essential attributes of domestic life and the ideal partner; the blessing of having children; the possession of love; hospitality; the habit of speaking pleasantly; gratitude; impartiality and adherence to virtue; self-restraint; moral conduct; fidelity (not coveting another's spouse); patience; freedom from envy; refraining from coveting others' wealth; avoiding backbiting; abstaining from idle speech; the fear of committing evil acts; living in harmony with the ways of the world; generosity; and attaining undying fame through these virtues. It is Valluvar’s view—and indeed the truth—that all these qualities are essential for both the man and the woman leading a domestic life. Let us now examine what Valluvar has to say about each of these aspects.
