Kuravanji holds a unique place in the Tamil Cittrilakkiyam (minor literature) tradition. It is a dramatic literary form encompassing elements such as the Kurathi (fortune-teller woman) predicting the future, the heroine expressing her state of love, the Kurathi describing the richness of the mountains and the country, receiving gifts for her predictions, and the Kuravan coming in search of the Kurathi. Among the distinct highlights of Kuravanji, the tradition of fortune-telling is paramount. This tradition did not emerge suddenly; it is considered to have evolved from fortune-telling traditions seen in Sangam literature, such as the Agavan Magal and Kattuvichi.
This study focuses on the tradition of fortune-telling found in Kuravanji literature. Specifically, it examines how the act of fortune-telling is portrayed in works like Tirukuttrala Kuravanji, Meenakshiammai Kuram, Sarabhendra Bhupala Kuravanji, and Kumbesar Kuravanji, along with the signs and omens the Kurathi relies on to make her predictions. This research reveals that fortune-telling is not merely an act of predicting the future, but a multi-dimensional concept that understands the heroine's state of mind, instills hope in her love, reflects social beliefs, and establishes the social role of the Kurathi.
