In the history of Bhakti literature, the Pallava period and the later Chera period are considered a "Golden Age," as both Vaishnavism and Shaivism flourished during this era. In accordance with Thirumular’s proclamation, "God created me well, so that I may render Him well into Tamil," many great souls endowed with wisdom and divine love emerged in Tamil Nadu.
Among them, those who held a deep devotion to Lord Vishnu and were immersed in His divine attributes (Kalyana Gunas) are revered as the 'Azhwars'. Among the twelve Azhwars, Kulasekhara Azhwar is unique; though a crowned monarch, he renounced his royal life for the sake of divine service.
This article extensively analyzes how the Azhwar, driven by his love for Vishnu, experiences the Divine in various roles—such as a mother and a beloved—specifically within the fifth Thirumozhi titled 'Tharuthuyarathadayeel'. Furthermore, this study elaborates on his philosophy of total surrender (Saranagathi) and his profound longing for the sacred hills of Thiruvengadam, as expressed through his Sanskrit work Mukundamala and his Tamil hymns.
