Abstract

The description of the Lord’s divine form in Thirumangai Alwar’s Periya Thirumozhi does not stand merely as a series f decrative words: it functions as a poetic process that generates wonder and longing in the heart f the devtee. This conclusion is established nased on a close reading of approximately seventy hymns (Pasurams) selected from the eleven books of Periya Thirumzhi. Throughnatural metaphors such as the ocean, dark cloud, kaya flower, emerald and anjanamalai (collyrum mountain), the dorm of the lord s depicted here not just as sheer darkness, but as a divine darkness filed with light and coolness. Dvne attributes such as lotus - like eyes, coral - like lips, lotus - like hands, mountain - like shoulders, the chest where Lakshmi resides, and the sacred form are bound together with grace, protection, and preservation. In the descriptions of the Narasimha, Varaha, and Vamana avatars, terrifying cosmic forms and forms of grace are seen combined. In divine places like Srirangam, Kannapuram, and Thirunangaim the scenes of the consecrated forms (Archa deities) blend with the local environment to manifest as a vision of worship. By combining the four elements-form, metaphor, divine nature, and devitional experience-devotion matures into ecstatic bliss through the stages if seeing, engaging, melting, and longing to see again. These findings apply only to the selected hymns: they have not been generalized for the entire text.
