Abstract
Sangam literature serves as a temporal mirror, accurately capturing the lifestyle of ancient Tamils. Among them, Pattinappalai—one of the Pathuppattu (Ten Idyls) anthologies—extensively explains the commercial excellence of the Chola port city, Kaveripoompattinam, and the socio-economic conditions of its inhabitants. This article examines the domesticated animals mentioned in Pattinappalai, their utility, and the bond between humans and these creatures through ecological and historical lenses. Specifically, it provides a detailed analysis of the water resources of the Kaveri River, the fertility of the Marutham (agricultural) landscape, and reports regarding animals reared in those lands, such as buffaloes, cows, dogs, chickens, and goats. Furthermore, by comparing these findings with recent archaeological results from Keezhadi, this paper logically presents the livestock rearing practices of Sangam-era Tamils and the methods by which horses were imported for commercial purposes. This study reveals how animals were not merely treated as necessities in Tamil society but were revered based on ethics (Aram), highlighting ancient thoughts on their conservation.
