Multidisciplinary Studies in the Development of Tamil: (From the Sangam Era to the Contemporary Age)

Abstract

This research paper provides a critical and comprehensive evaluation of the multidisciplinary evolution of the Tamil language across distinct historical periods—from the ancient Sangam age to the contemporary era of Artificial Intelligence. Tamil's classification as a classical language relies not only on its poetic heritage, but on its capacity to function as a precise medium for empirical sciences, astronomy, ecology, architecture, jurisprudence, medicine, mathematics, and computational linguistics. By embedding explicit textual citations, verse numbers, and line references from classical works such as Tolkappiyam, Purananuru, Pattinappalai, Thirukkural, Silappathikaram, and Thirumandhiram, this paper demonstrates the empirical foundation of Tamil scholarship. Furthermore, it addresses contemporary technological challenges and outlines strategies for integrating Tamil into modern machine-learning models and higher education.
