Food is considered medicine, and medicine is regarded as food in Siddha medicine, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the two. In this tradition, everything that constitutes food also has medicinal value, and vice versa. Dietetics plays a significant role in Siddha medicine, as illustrated in the ancient text "Badhartha Guna Chintamani," where the Siddhas detailed the therapeutic benefits of various foods. They meticulously examined the qualities of staples such as salt, water, milk, and grains like rice and legumes, providing guidance on which foods to consume to avert illness. However, the rise of Western culture has diminished the understanding of these principles in Siddha medicine, leading to an increase in diseases. Therefore, food is vital, serving as the foundation of Siddha medicine. This article will explore some classic diets along with their medicinal properties.
