Kongu folk performing arts and present day

Folk performing arts are inherently performative, encompassing various forms such as dance, song, or a combination of both along with dialogue. Artists, either solo or in groups, present narratives, incidents, or ideas to an audience through these expressive mediums. While folk performing arts in rural areas may differ in style and setting, they share common elements that are essential for understanding their essence. Notably, there is no designated venue for these performances; they can take place in a multitude of locations, including temples, towns, and streets. Performers often engage in dance and song during rituals honoring minor deities, and it is common to see them performing in front of deities during processions. This illustrates the expansive realm in which folk performing arts thrive.

In the early 18th and 19th centuries, translation efforts advanced significantly, initially focusing on producing essential textbooks for Tamil-language schools. However, by the mid-19th century, the rise of English education led to a decline in translation activities, as students began studying various subjects in English alongside Tamil. As the 20th century dawned, the translation effort revived, driven by the desire for education in one's native language. This resurgence highlighted the importance of translating research findings, articles, innovations, agricultural advancements, and scientific knowledge into Tamil. Over the past two millennia, attempts to translate texts from languages like Pali, Prakrit, and Sanskrit have remained largely theoretical. True verbatim translation begins with a deep understanding of the source language, ideally from a native perspective.

Upholding good conduct is fundamental to leading a fulfilling life. These values serve as a protective barrier against life’s challenges and are crucial for cultivating a meaningful existence. Moral principles illuminate one’s path like a lamp, guiding individuals even in their darkest moments. When a society embodies strong moral values, it thrives both inwardly and outwardly, fostering a supportive and secure community. Much like the saying "though a cow may die, the tether remains," a community's survival hinges on mutual respect, regardless of the status of its members. Societies that fail to abide by their own moral framework struggle to achieve a high standard of living. Thus, strong moral values are indispensable for the flourishing of civilization. In this context, proverbs encapsulate the essence of Tamil culture by offering wisdom for a better quality of life. These straightforward sayings provide clarity and understanding, illuminating the language itself. Known as primary language, a term introduced by ancient Tamil grammarians, proverbs underscore the significance of the basic rules that govern the language.

The significance of food is prominently displayed in various cultural events throughout Sangamanthar's life, including weddings, religious ceremonies, festivals, warfare, and games. This article examines how the availability of food—shaped by the land—serves not only as a vital source of sustenance but also as a distinctive element of the unique culture of the Palantamizhar

The Sangam literary period was characterized by a profound reverence for nature, with people living in harmony with their surroundings. The Sangam poets, regarded as sages, delved into the origins of the universe and its celestial movements, demonstrating impressive knowledge of astronomy and planetary science. They perceived the world as a manifestation of the five Buddhas and revered them as divine beings. Among these is Uva Day, associated with the worship of Mondays, a theme celebrated by virtually all poets throughout history. They extolled the Moon as a child, a deity, and a messenger. Ancient Tamils honored the moon by creating moon courtyards within their homes. Mondays were thought to resonate with the human psyche and marked the time for rituals following the harvest. From Chitrai to Panguni, every full moon day was considered auspicious for divine worship. Many forms of nature worship and festivals persist among people today. In the Marut region, devotion to Indra was prevalent, which evolved into land-based rituals with the arrival of the Aryans. This worship aimed to honor the moon and safeguard the environment. The ancient Tamils revered various phases of the moon as divine entities, and Sangam hymns provide evidence of women praying to the crescent moon. Notably, Monday worship remains a communal practice, transcending religious and caste boundaries to this day. The term Uva signifies a full day, while the periods leading up to the full moon were referred to as crescent. Presently, these concepts have been replaced in common language by the terms Poornami and Amavasai. The term Uva Naan is now predominantly used in Malayalam, where Uva corresponds to Amavasa and Velutha Uva signifies Poornami. This article will explore the significance of the word Uva, its contextual applications, and the unique importance of Uva Day.

Nature serves as the foundation for oriental art and intellectual traditions. Philosophical texts are also structured in similar manner. The reason for this is to explore nature and draw inspiration from it for human achievement. At this point, the three scriptures Tirukkural, Dhammapada, and Tao Te Ching describe their philosophical pursuits centered on the intrinsic qualities of nature, the equality of human life, and the greatness of human dignity. The panchaboothas including land and water, as well as the biological processes and activities, are philosophical pursuits that improve human life. In this way, these texts demonstrate that the quest for Oriental philosophy revolves on nature.
