Abstract

Language is a tool used by living beings to express their thoughts. Grammar books demonstrate how language is spoken at various levels, undergoes changes, and provides a systematic structure for these linguistic elements. Such grammatical treatises have emerged in both Tamil and Kannada throughout the ages. This article examines the structure of Tinai (class/category) and Paal (gender/number) in these two languages, based on the first available grammatical works for phonology and morphology. This study investigates the systems of Tinai and Paal by taking Tolkappiyam, the most ancient grammatical work in Tamil, and Karnataka Bhashabhushanam, a work that defines the grammar for letters and words in Kannada, as its primary basis.
