Digitization of Tamil Grammar Texts

Abstract

This article examines how the cultural worldview of a Tamil-speaking community is embedded in its language and reflected in its grammatical traditions. Classical Tamil grammars reveal a structural orientation grounded in an implicit idealization, long before modern linguistic theories articulated such concepts. However, this idealization varies according to the social context in which grammars are produced. During the colonial period, Tamil grammars underwent a significant shift influenced by new political and social conditions. This study compares the idealization found in traditional Tamil grammars with that of colonial-era grammars, highlighting how socio-historical changes reshaped grammatical thought.
