The subject and predicate form the basic parts of a sentence, serving as the foundation for various sentence types. Syntax, as Pa. Veerappan notes in Sanga Ilakkiya Nadai, studies the arrangement of language elements and their interrelations.
Syntax can be analyzed in two ways: by the length of sequences (thodar) and by their structure. Poets use short or long sequences, sound patterns, and word choices to shape their style, making alliterative, assonantal, or contrasting sequences, as well as noun, verb, finite, or participial phrases. Sometimes grammar is stretched for poetic effect, and repetition of sequences may occur.
In Sangam poetry, sequences involving subject, predicate, participles, and other syntactic elements bend and adapt to create unique expression. This paper examines such syntactic patterns in the works of Sangam women poets.
In sentence construction, noun phrases and verb phrases occupy a fundamental and essential place. Noun phrases include adjective, appositional, exclamatory, and substitute forms, while verb phrases include adverbial, participial, finite, and case-marked forms. Among these, the ēkāra phrases found in the poems of Sangam women poets are the focus of this study.
