CHARACTERISTICS OF FEMALE POETS MENTIONED IN THE PURANANURU

Abstract

Ancient Tamil society cultivated a profound respect for Penmai (femininity) and the foundational power of motherhood. This reverence permeated both daily life and theological practice, exemplified by the worship of the deity in diverse forms, including the feminine emanations (Thirumas and Kalaimas) and the syncretic union (Ammaiyappan). To reconstruct the lived reality of this era, the classical corpus of the Purananuru is invaluable. Specifically, the fifty-seven extant songs attributed to fifteen female poets serve as a critical mirror, reflecting the socio-cultural characteristics and emotional terrain of women in ancient Tamilakam. This review article aims to analyze and systematically explain the intricate cultural elements related to women, tracing how these foundational attributes were articulated, preserved, and given voice specifically through the compositions of female Sangam poets.

தாய்மைக்கும், அதற்கு அடிப்படையான பெண்மைக்கும் மதிப்பளித்துப் போற்றியது பண்டைய தமிழகம். தெய்வத்தைத் திருமகளாகவும், கலைமகளாகவும், அம்மையப்பனாகவும் வழிபடும் மரபுடையது. புறநானூற்றில் 15 பெண்பாற் புலவர்கள் சோந்து பாடிய 57 பாடல்களும் அக்கால பெண்களின் பண்புநலன்களை வெளிப்படுத்தும் காலக்கண்ணாடியாகத் திகழ்கின்றன. இவ்வாறு பெண்களால் இயற்றப்பட்ட பாடல்களில் உள்ள பெண்கள் சார்ந்த பண்பாட்டுக் கூறுகளை ஆராய்ந்து விளக்குவதாக இவ்வாய்வுக் கட்டுரை அமைந்துள்ளது.
