The study examines how the Manimekalai Kappiyam records the Sangkiya philosophy prevalent in Tamil Nadu in the second century AD. Furthermore, it investigates how the text positions Samkhya (Sangkiya) in relation to the ascendant Buddhist philosophy championed by the epic's protagonist. By contrasting Kapila’s dualistic framework of Prakriti (matter) and Purusha (consciousness) against the Buddhist doctrines of dependent origination and impermanence, the study illuminates the vibrant intellectual debates of the Sangam and post-Sangam eras. Ultimately, this research underscores the Manimekalai not merely as a religious narrative, but as an invaluable historical compendium that preserves the nuances of early Indian philosophical systems as they were understood and debated in the ancient Tamil landscape.
