Religious Condition Revealed by Pallava Period Coins – A Study

This study analyzes Pallava-period coins (6th to 9th century CE) as crucial historical and numismatic evidence to reconstruct the religious landscape of South India during the transformative "Age of Bhakti." Utilizing both primary and secondary sources—including recovered coins, inscriptions, and historical texts—the research investigates how coin symbols and designs reflect the era's religious shift, notably the rebirth of Hinduism following its post-Sangam decline and the conversion of Mahendravarman I from Jainism. The analysis reveals that while the predominant presence of symbols like the Nandi and Trishula underscores the primacy of Shaivism, the inclusion of Vaishnavite motifs (Shankha and Chakra) alongside indirect traces of Jainism and Buddhism highlights a period of peak growth for various Hindu sects, prevailing religious tolerance, and extensive royal patronage.
