Abstract
In Sangam literature, the separation of the heroine from her family after she leaves with the hero is portrayed through the deep emotions of Natrai, the heroine’s mother. The heroine, who has grown up with love, care, comfort, and prosperity, leaves her home and travels with the hero through the difficult Palai landscape. Thinking about her daughter’s young age, playful nature, comfortable life at home, and the hardships she may face on the journey, Natrai becomes deeply worried and distressed. Her memories of her daughter and her concern for her safety and well-being reveal the depth of maternal love and the pain of separation. This emotional state of Natrai is expressed through the concept of ‘Manai Marutchi’. The present study examines the mental and emotional state of Natrai as portrayed in the Manaimarutchi poems found among the Udanpokku poems in Natrinai. The study focuses on maternal love, separation, memories of the daughter, anxiety about her journey, and concern for her future well-being.
