Plagiarism Policy

Every manuscript submitted to KALANJIYAM is screened for similarity before peer review.

Screening

Every submission is checked with similarity-detection software during editorial screening, before it is sent for peer review, and again before publication if it has changed substantially.

As a guide, manuscripts with an overall similarity index above 10% (excluding the reference list, properly quoted text and standard method descriptions), or with substantial overlap with any single source, are returned to the authors or rejected. The score is only a starting point: editors read the report and judge every match.

Similarity software matches Tamil text less reliably than English, so editors also compare doubtful passages with printed and online sources by hand.

What counts as plagiarism

  • Verbatim copying of text, tables or figures without quotation and citation.
  • Paraphrasing another’s ideas or text without citation.
  • Text recycling (self-plagiarism): reusing substantial parts of one’s own published work without citation and disclosure.
  • Duplicate or redundant publication: publishing the same study, or the same data, in more than one journal.
  • Translation plagiarism: publishing a Tamil (or English) translation of an article already published in another language, or of someone else’s work, without disclosure and permission.

Quotations from classical texts – Sangam poems, Tolkāppiyam, Thirukkural, Silappatikāram, devotional hymns and their commentaries (urai) – are welcome when clearly quoted and cited with the edition and the verse or sūtra number. Presenting a published commentary, or another scholar’s reading of a verse, as your own interpretation is plagiarism.

What happens

Before publication: depending on the extent, the manuscript is returned for revision or rejected, and the authors are told why. After publication: the journal follows the COPE flowcharts; the outcome may be a correction or a retraction (see Corrections and retractions), and the authors’ institution may be informed.
