Abstract

This research paper discusses the unique and ancient livelihood of traditional fishermen who rely on the simple Kattumaram (catamaran) as a foundational symbol of their labor, culture, and economic survival. This community is currently facing a severe crisis driven by modern capitalism, the unchecked intrusion of deep-sea mechanized fishing vessels, and detrimental government policies, which together have resulted in the seizure of their traditional resources and profound socio-economic marginalization. Ponneelan's novel, Thedal (The Search), is highlighted as a significant literary work that meticulously documents the historical moment when this oppressed fishing community awakens, uniting politically to form trade unions and fight for the recovery of their traditional rights and self-respect. This research aims to analyze the structural oppression faced by the Kattumaram fishermen as depicted in Thedal, examining the importance of their collective action through the lens of class struggle. Ultimately, the study seeks to establish, from a sociological perspective, that the Kattumaram is not merely a vessel but a crucial symbol of economic freedom, and its successful reclamation is indispensable for achieving social justice.
