Life Ethics Portrayed in Silappathikaram among the Five Great Epics

Abstract

Silappathikaram is the foremost among the five great epics of Tamil literature. Among its many distinguished features, its stylistic excellence is perhaps the most prominent. For those who study literature, the "style" (nadai) serves as the primary gateway to the heart of a work. Literary style is an indispensable tool for conveying the authentic emotions of the human soul to others. In this epic, the manner in which the poetic style is adapted to suit the diverse feelings and narratives of various characters—ranging from ruling monarchs and artists to religious scholars and common citizens—is truly remarkable and worthy of high praise.

Through Silappathikaram, the author Ilango Adigal has established various life principles such as Dharma (Aram), domestic life, moral conduct, the consequences of past deeds (Oozhvinai), and asceticism as essential ethics for living. Therefore, this research paper aims to analyze these life ethics as presented in the epic.

ஐம்பெரும் காப்பியங்களில் முதன்மையானது சிலப்பதிகாரம். சிலம்பின் சிறப்புக் கூறுகளில் நாம் முதன்மையாக நினைவில் கொள்வது அதன் நடை சிறப்பாகும். இலக்கியம் கற்போர் நெஞ்சில் அதன் நடையே வழியாய் அமையும். மனிதா்களின் உள்ளத்தின் உணா்வுகளை உள்ளபடியே மற்றவா்களுக்கு உணா்த்த இலக்கிய நடையே இன்றியமையாத ஒரு கருவியாகும். இக்காப்பியத்தில் நாடாளும் அரசா் முதல் கலைஞா்கள், சமயச் சான்றோர், சாதாரணக் குடிகள் போன்ற பலரது உணா்வுக்கும் செய்திக்கும் ஏற்ற வகையில் காப்பிய நடையினை அமைத்திருக்கும் முறை வியந்து பாராட்டத்தக்கது ஆகும். இளங்கோவடிகள் சிலம்பின் வழியாக வாழ்வியல் நெறிகளாக அறம், இல்லறம், ஒழுக்கம், முற்பிறப்பில் செய்த ஊழ்வினை, துறவறம் போன்ற செய்திகளை வாழ்வியல் நெறிகளாக அமைத்துக் காட்டியுள்ளார். எனவே இது போன்ற வாழியல் நெறிகள் பற்றி இக்கட்டுரையில் ஆராயப்படுகிறது.
