Kalithogai stands as a magnificent literary treasure house depicting the internal life (Akam) of the ancient Tamil society. This work, which defined the ultimate grammar for culture as "Panbena Paduvathu Paadarinthu Oluguthal" (Culture is living in harmony with the ways of the world), meticulously records the marriage systems, rituals, and domestic virtues of Tamils. This article provides a detailed analysis of the marriage culture described in Kalithogai based on sociological, anthropological, and linguistic perspectives. Specifically, it discusses how the eight types of marriage systems—often considered northern traditions—align with Tamil traditions and manifest within Kalithogai. The Sangam era's matrimonial structure is comprehensively compiled here, focusing on the "Valorous Marriages" displayed through Eru Thazhuvuthal (bull-taming) in the Mullai landscape, the rituals of circumambulating the sacred fire in the Marutham landscape, and the ethical values of the Neithal landscape (Song 133). Furthermore, this paper deeply analyzes how the Tamil love life, originating in Kalavu (secret love) and stabilizing in Karpu (wedded life), transformed into a social institution, as well as the dignity of domestic life that remained steadfast even amidst poverty.
