Abstract
In the history of Tamil literature, the 7th century CE is considered a period of great religious and literary renaissance. The Bhakti movement that emerged during this time transformed the Agapporul (interior/love) traditions of Sangam literature onto a new spiritual plane. Specifically, Thirugnanasambandar, in his Thevaram hymns, metaphorically portrayed God as the Lover (Hero) and the soul as the Beloved (Heroine), expressing supreme love through the 'Nayaka-Nayaki Bhava' (Lover-Beloved concept).
This article analyzes in detail how the emotions of the heroine in Sambandar's songs are expressed in harmony with nature and Saiva Siddhanta philosophies. It analyzes stages such as the heroine’s astonishment upon seeing the divine Lover arriving to seek alms, her suffering due to separation, and her complaining to her confidante. Furthermore, the article presents a detailed study on how the Ithinai Uriporul (the core subject matter of the five landscapes) formulated by Tolkappiyar underwent a spiritual evolution in Bhakti literature, and the role of these songs in social change.
