An Overview of the Traditional Status of Paththuppattu Literature

The Pattuppāṭṭu (Ten Idylls) and Eṭṭuttokai (Eight Anthologies) stand as the earliest examples of Tamil literature, serving as an enduring bridge that allows the 21st-century generation to comprehend the lifestyle of ancient Tamils. These distinct literary forms constitute the corpus of Sangam literature, which is classified into two main divisions and conceptually centered around the themes of Akam (interior/love) and Puram (exterior/war and public life). While Sangam literature is currently being read and interpreted through various approaches, Pattuppāṭṭu specifically is understood through the lens of Akam and Puram, the unique Āṟṟuppaṭai (guide) genre, and chronological research. Although many scholars have previously analyzed Pattuppāṭṭu from a traditional standpoint, continued re-examination is necessary to align with chronological methodologies and the evolving context of human life. Therefore, this study is significant as it undertakes a re-analysis of Pattuppāṭṭu literature from a traditional perspective.
