'Water' (Neer) is one of the "Great Poems" (Maha Kavithai) written by the poet Vairamuthu. This is a long-form poem spanning fifty-four pages. Despite its length, the poem maintains a brisk and engaging pace that prevents the reader from feeling weary. In this work, the poet records vital ideas for the current generation through the lens of environmental consciousness. He illustrates how humans pollute essential water sources such as rivers, wells, and ponds—which serve as primary sources of drinking water—within this modern computer age.
Accordingly, this article analyzes the indispensability of water and how the pollution of rivers like the Ganges and Yamuna (famed for their sanctity), as well as wells and ponds, by sewage, industrial waste, chemicals, and dye factory effluents, leads not only to the contamination of drinking water but also to the degradation of the environment..
