Social Elements in Natrinai: A Multifaceted Document of Ancient Tamil Life Values

Sangam literature serves as a historical repository recording the internal (Akam) and external (Puram) lives of ancient Tamils. Among them, Natrinai, which is praised as the first text in the Ettuthokai (Eight Anthologies), centers on inner love traditions while offering incomparable historical data through the embedded social elements in its background.
This paper comprehensively examines the family structure, women's personality and social status, moral codes of love, landscape-based (Thinai) occupations, barter-based commercial economy, the culture of hospitality considered the primary virtue of ancient Tamil life, ecological values, and the political framework portrayed in the poems of Natrinai.
In particular, using literary evidence, this article analyzes how individual ethics laid the foundation for overall social stability in Sangam society, and how the relationship between nature and human beings encompassed principles of eco-feminism.
