The Primacy of Earthenware and the Contribution of Potters in the Archaeological History of Tamil Nadu

Abstract

Ancient Tamils have left behind their cultural elements as remains in the very places where they lived. Furthermore, the literature, inscriptions, sculptures, paintings, architecture, and monuments of the ancient Tamils greatly help in understanding their history. The hand-crafting techniques of the ancient Tamils are revealed through the earthenware, copper plates, tools, and ornaments made by them and recovered from excavations. Buried and hidden structures speak volumes about the creativity of that era. Additionally, terracotta figurines and burial monuments serve as vital evidence for uncovering ancient history. Thus, among all archaeological evidences that reflect the lifestyle and intellect of the ancient Tamils, pottery and earthenware are the most essential. These earthenware objects highlight the diverse customs and supreme intelligence of the ancient Tamils. The primary objective of this research article is to showcase the artistic skill and cognitive brilliance of ancient potters through these artifacts.
