Abstract
Tamil literature is today undergoing extensive re-reading on a wide scale. Both Tamils and foreigners have engaged in this research. Tamil literature is not merely literature, but serves as a treasure trove that paves the way for various studies such as culture, history, folklore, ethnography, folkloristics, linguistics, and anthropology. It can be said that this very nature is what drives researchers towards Sangam literature.
Sangam literature has used various techniques to express human emotions. Various techniques such as imagery, symbol, ullurai (inner meaning), ullurai uvamam (implicit simile), iraichi (suggestive meaning), and figures of speech (ani) have been employed.
This article explores the concept of 'ullurai' as found in "Kurunthogai", which is specially distinguished as "Nalla Kurunthogai" (The Good Kurunthogai), a compilation of Sangam literature.
