Abstract

Araththodu Nittral is an important concept in Sangam Akam Literature. It refers to the process of revealing the secret love relationship of the heroine to the appropriate persons and leading it towards social acceptance and marriage. This theme is found in the Ettuthokai works such as Kurunthokai, Ainkurunuru, Natrinai, Akananuru and Kalithogai. The heroine usually reveals her love to the friend and the friend conveys it to the foster-mother or mother. Tolkappiyar explains Araththodu Nittral as an important stage in the transition from Kalavu to Karpiyal. Thus it serves as a link between personal love and social acceptance.
