Abstract
Ancient Tamils possessed an excellent water resource management technology that was deeply harmonized with nature. They were a people who revered water as the very life force. Since the Sangam era, Tamils integrated agriculture and its foundational element water resource management into their way of life. Against this backdrop, the primary objective of this article is to analyze the hydrological techniques and management principles revealed in ancient Tamil literature. This article explores how the Tamils meticulously classified water bodies based on land topography such as wells (kinaru), ponds (kulam), lakes (eri), irrigation tanks (kammai), and drinking water tanks (ooruni) as well as engineering marvels like Karikala Cholan’s Kallanai (Grand Anicut), which diverted river floods for irrigation.
