Abstract

Madurai Kalambagam is a literary work composed by Kumaraguruparar that celebrates Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of Madurai known as Chokalingam, as its central hero. Highlighting the author's profound knowledge of Puranic literature, the text weaves together various mythological episodes—such as Goddess Uma's birth as Malayathwajan's daughter and her penance on the Kamba River, Shiva humbling the Darukavanam sages, his incarnation as a fisherman to marry Uma, the beheading of Brahma, his victory over a Siddha in a sword fight, and his grace bestowed upon Vichara Sarmar. Ultimately, these narratives offer readers a deeper understanding of Lord Shiva's divine deeds and the spiritual benefits of his worship.
