Sangam literature divides the lives of the people of the Sangam period into two categories: internal life and external life. Sangam literature divides stories about domestic life into internal life and stories about gifts, war, heroism, and rule into external life. Among these, internal life is when a man and a woman fall in love and enjoy each other. Thus, the feelings they experience between themselves, i.e., internal, are called internal by ancient Tamil literature. The oldest Tamil grammar book available to us today, Tolkappiyam, explains internal and external life in detail in its content. In Sangam literature, internal life is a literary genre that expresses the love between a hero and a heroine. It is called manalathu, and it focuses on pleasure in domestic life.
