The food philosophy of the Sangam Tamils
Keywords:
Food Philosophy, Millets, Health, Food is MedicineAbstract
Food is the foremost among the basic necessities of human life. The food habits of a society serve as an important source for understanding its culture, civilization, lifestyle, economic conditions, occupations, and environment. The food practices of the Sangam Age are among the finest identifiers of Tamil civilization. Based on the natural resources of the five ecological landscapes (Ainthinai), people organized their dietary practices accordingly. Millets, rice, dairy products, fish, meat, honey, fruits, and vegetables formed the foundation of their diet. This food system, which was closely connected with nature, preserved both physical health and social harmony. Therefore, the food habits of the Sangam period are not only historical evidence that illustrates the greatness of Tamil culture but also serve as a guide to a healthy lifestyle in the present day. The natural and wholesome diet of the Sangam Tamils was the primary reason for their good health and longevity. They followed the principle of “Food itself is medicine, and medicine itself is food.” Through this, it can be understood that food was not merely a means to satisfy hunger; rather, it was a cultural symbol that reflected social relationships and humanitarian values. The natural environment played a significant role in shaping the food culture of the Tamils.
