Livelihood Aesthetics and the Dynamics of Human Relationships in Modern Tamil Short Stories: An In-Depth Analysis of Vannadasan's Works

This research paper extensively analyzes the livelihood aesthetics, character portrayal, and various dimensions of human relationships reflected in the short stories of Vannadasan (S. Kalyanasundaram), considered one of the most prominent creators in the world of modern Tamil short fiction. Vannadasan’s stories capture the everyday lives and internal conflicts of ordinary people with poetic undertones and subtle descriptions.
In this paper, primary short story collections such as Nadugai, Thanumai, Micham, Nabikkamalam, Kuthukkal, and the Sahitya Akademi Award-winning Oru Siru Isai are subjected to detailed analysis.
Furthermore, based on academic data published in leading research journals such as Modern Thamizh Research and Shanlax International Journal of Tamil Studies, his linguistic artistry and the cultural challenges encountered when translating his stories into English are comprehensively evaluated. Entwined with the fluidity of the Thamirabarani River and the realism of the Tirunelveli regional dialect, his works illustrate how humanity is reclaimed within the mechanized context of contemporary life.
