Abstract

Sangam literature is a valuable repository that reflects the culture, social life, political conditions, economic activities, and literary traditions of ancient Tamil society. The poets of the Sangam age not only composed poems in praise of kings and philanthropists but also recorded their mutual friendship, affection, respect, and literary relationships. The friendship among poets was not merely a personal bond; it was founded on values such as virtue, knowledge, generosity, art, and social responsibility. Relationships such as those between Kapilar and Pari and Avvaiyar and Athiyaman illustrate the close bond between poets and patrons and reveal the humanistic values of Sangam society. The words of appreciation, praise, and benediction exchanged among poets also demonstrate their mutual respect and literary fellowship. This study examines the nature of friendship, mutual appreciation, and benedictions among Sangam poets through selected literary references. It further highlights the literary, social, and cultural significance of these relationships and their contribution to the development of Tamil literary tradition.
