Abstract

In the Kongu region, even today the twin brothers Ponnar and Shankar, known as Annanmar Swamis, are worshipped as deities in many places. They lived as leaders of the people and as unparalleled warriors, and after attaining a heroic death in battle, they were deified by their younger sister Arukkani Thangam. Later, they were accepted as gods by all the people of that region, who built temples for the Annanmars and continue to perform poojas and worship them. People of that region, both as various ethnic groups and in general, began worshipping the Annanmar Swamis, and today Annanmar Swami is regarded as a family deity and as a guardian deity among various districts and communities. The purpose of this article is to explain the beliefs and worship practices of the people who worship Annanmar.
