Abstract
Chola king Karikala Peruvallathan laid the foundation for the way of life and livelihood of artists during the Sangam period. Through his generosity and exemplary governance, he treated both his people and the artists as the two precious eyes of his kingdom. He never turned away the artists who came seeking his support. The Sangam literary work Porunaratrupadai beautifully portrays this noble virtue of generosity. Moreover, Porunaratrupadai, one of the works of the Pathupattu (Ten Idylls), speaks about the porunas, wandering artists who could disguise themselves and perform like others, as well as highlighting the greatness of the kings who supported and sustained the lives of these struggling artists. This research article also explores how artists who received gifts and patronage guided and encouraged other artists towards generous kings.
