The Lived Struggles of Women in Antanoor Sura's Short Stories: Social Documentation and a Critical Feminist Perspective

Abstract

This article primarily investigates the multifaceted lived struggles faced by women within patriarchal social structures, as depicted in seven selected short stories by the 20th-century modern Tamil short story writer, Antanoor Sura. These stories include 'Aval Oru Pinju', 'Viratti', 'Oozhiyam', 'Kurali', 'Uththama Seelar', 'Paruvaththunikkai', and 'Theeyadi Aravam'. The article approaches these literary reflections from a critical feminist perspective, contextualizing them within sociological data. Specifically, it deeply analyzes central issues such as facing sexual harassment in widowhood ('Viratti'), young marriage and loss of educational rights due to poverty and social pressures ('Paruvaththunikkai'), the compulsion to resort to social media struggles despite the existence of workplace sexual harassment laws ('Uththama Seelar'), and the ultimate tragedy of refugee life ('Midhatru Thagam'). Recent social statistics, such as a 55.6% increase in child marriages in Tamil Nadu¹, the absence of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in 59% of organizations under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act², and the significant social impact faced by widows³, confirm that Sura's short stories serve as social documents of their time. This study establishes that women's struggles are not merely personal tragedies but are, rather, the consequence of legal failures, social contradictions, and the continuation of traditional constraints.
