The Sociology and Value Imprints of Purananuru: An Evolutionary Perspective from Tribal Society to a Land-owning System

Abstract

Purananuru, a seminal work of Sangam literature, stands as both a historical reflection of the heroic age of the Tamil people and a repository of their cultural and ethical traditions. This research paper analyzes the various stages of social evolution as recorded in the verses of Purananuru. Specifically, it examines the transformation from an egalitarian tribal society, characterized by a classless and communal way of life, into a land-owning society where property and ownership became dominant. This transition, driven by the growth of material production and commerce, is analyzed based on the sociological frameworks defined by scholars such as Kovai Gnani, Na. Vanamamalai, and Me. Thu. Rasukumar.¹

Furthermore, the paper extensively discusses the philosophical and sociological impacts of the core values that sustained the family structure amidst these societal shifts. These include domestic valour (Manaiyil Veeram) and the perception of children as wealth (Kuzhanthai Selvam). The study also explores the socially transformative power of education¹ and the profound significance of generosity (Eegai),¹ which was revered as a fundamental duty essential for livelihood. The righteous conduct of the Sangam poets, who upheld their integrity even in poverty, serves as a testament to how these ancient Sangam-era values can fulfill the needs of contemporary society.
