Abstract

The term 'Thavvai' in Tamil denotes mother and elder sister, and in this context, it refers to the primordial goddess and the goddess of Prosperity or Abundance of the Tamils, known as Moodevi. At present, while the worship of this deity is gradually declining, the use of ‘Moodevi’ as a derogatory term can be observed among the people. From Sangam-period literature through contemporary literature, various names referring to Thavvai, either directly or indirectly, can be found. The study of these names helps establish that this deity was associated with prosperity and abundance. Through this, the objective of this research is to establish that the word 'Moodevi' is not a derogatory term but a term denoting prosperity.
