Abstract

Ethical principles guide human beings in living a virtuous life, and the Thirukkural serves as an exemplary literary record of these principles. The work is structured into three sections: Aram (Virtue), Porul (Wealth/Statecraft), and Inbam (Love/Pleasure). Although Aram is highlighted as the foremost among these three divisions, scientific concepts—spanning fields such as geology, medicine, hydrology, environmental science, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, agriculture, mathematics, and astronomy—are interspersed throughout the text, demonstrating the author's scientific acumen. Valluvar has incorporated scientific observations as metaphors not only in the sections on Virtue and Wealth but also in Kamathuppal (the section on Love), which deals with the ethics of experiencing pleasure; this article aims to highlight those specific instances.
