Abstract

This research paper presents an exhaustive study on the concept of 'Education' (Kalviudamai) as expounded in the Thirukkural, an ancient Tamil ethical masterpiece. The analysis categorizes education into four distinct dimensions: General Education, Vocational Education, Ethical Education, and Experiential Education. It explores the conceptual intersection between Thiruvalluvar's didactic principles and modern pedagogical theories, such as John Dewey’s Experiential Learning ("Learning by Doing") and Mahatma Gandhi’s vocational "Nai Talim" philosophy. Furthermore, this study integrates contemporary neuroscientific research to demonstrate how Valluvar's concept of flawless learning ("Karka Kasadara") aligns with high-order cognitive functions governed by the brain's Prefrontal Cortex, and memory consolidation mechanisms in the Hippocampus.4 Through this interdisciplinary approach, the paper establishes that ancient Tamil educational wisdom is not merely an ethical guide but a scientifically sound framework designed to cultivate holistic, ethically responsible, and socially conscious citizens.
