Since ancient times, the practice of naming individuals has been driven by the desire for one's lineage to endure within society. Specifically, bestowing the names of ancestors fosters the belief that they continue to live among us, transcending their physical existence. Sangam literature reveals that the custom of naming a child after the father originated from this very sentiment. This research paper examines various customs and practices—such as lighting lamps at dusk, the Madal-eru-thal ritual, Brahmins wearing the kudumi (tuft of hair), the beating of drums parai, and specific marriage, worship, and festival traditions—as they are depicted in Sangam literature.
