Abstract

In the history of Tamil devotional literature, the Thiruvasagam, which stands as the eighth Thirumurai (sacred volume), serves as a map for the spiritual journey to attain God's Divine Grace (Thiruvarul). This work, bestowed by Manikkavasagar, revered as Vathavur Adigal, subtly explains the relationships between the three fundamental truths of Saiva Siddhanta: Pati (God), Pasu (Soul), and Pasam (Bondage). This article investigates how God's 'Divine Grace' is essential to remove the three impurities (Mummalam)—Anavam (ego), Kanmam (karma), and Maya (illusion)—that bind souls, and to attain the life of supreme bliss. Specifically, it analyzes how the women's games featured in Thiruvasagam act as media to convey profound philosophical concepts to ordinary people. Furthermore, with the aid of scriptural texts (Sastras) such as Thiruvarutpayan and Sivagnana Siddhiyar, the nature and power of Divine Grace are explained in detail. This article establishes that Thiruvasagam is not merely a devotional text but stands as a complete guide to life from psychological, scientific, and philosophical perspectives.
