Abstract

Among the records of internal and external lives of the ancient Tamil society, Purananuru is an incomparable historical treasure. The poems of Purananuru discuss in detail the political structure, duties of kings, principles of governance, taxation theories, and the functioning of courts of justice during the Sangam era. This paper comprehensively examines the political concepts featured in Purananuru, the system of righteous governance known as "Sengonmai" (unwavering justice), and the relationship between the state and its citizens. This paper establishes that concepts equivalent to modern political science thoughts were in practice as early as the Sangam period.
