A decade of Tamil scholarship

KALANJIYAM – International Journal of Tamil Studies (களஞ்சியம் – சர்வதேச தமிழ் ஆய்வு இதழ்) completes 10 years in 2026. Since its first issue in February 2016, the journal has published 544 articles across 36 issues, by 718 authors from 6 countries.

Published by NGM College, Pollachi, Kalanjiyam is open access, double-blind peer reviewed and registered with Crossref for DOIs. For research scholars, Ph.D. candidates and faculty in Tamil studies, that decade-long record matters when a university decides which publications count.

From Pollachi to a global readership

Kalanjiyam began at Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College (Autonomous), Pollachi, run jointly by the Department of Tamil and the Department of Library and Information Science. Its aim from day one: a platform where academicians enrich Tamil language and literature through rigorous research.

The journal is bilingual by design. Articles appear in Tamil or English, while every abstract and reference list is in English. That keeps Tamil scholarship readable and citable for researchers outside Tamil Nadu. Its e-ISSN, 2456-5148, is registered with the ISSN National Centre for India.

Will my university accept a paper published in Kalanjiyam?

Since February 2025, each university decides which journals it accepts — and Kalanjiyam’s practices line up with the areas UGC asks institutions to check.

UGC discontinued the UGC-CARE journal list by a public notice dated 11 February 2025, following its 584th Commission meeting on 3 October 2024. Universities and colleges now build their own journal-evaluation systems from UGC’s suggested parameters (Careers360, CASRAI). Those parameters cover the editorial board, peer review and editorial policy, publication ethics, and visibility.

What universities check What Kalanjiyam offers
Journal identity e-ISSN 2456-5148, published by an autonomous college since 2016
Editorial board Named editorial team at NGM College, plus an advisory committee with Sahitya Akademi advisory member Dr. Sirpi Balasubramaniam and Tamil faculty from Bharathiar University, Alagappa University, Gandhigram Rural Institute and the Central University at Thiruvarur (editorial team)

Before you publish

  • Confirm the founding year: the journal site says 2014, 2015 and a first issue in February 2016 in different places.
  • Name specific universities only if you hold written confirmation that they accept Kalanjiyam papers.
  • Add the Government of Tamil Nadu Best Journal Award in Tamil only with its year and a source; the About page claims it, but I could not verify it.
  • Link to ngmtamil.in, not kalanjiyam.in, which currently shows a garment manufacturer’s website.
