The Eight Heroic Deeds

Abstract

This research article extensively examines the Eight Heroic Deeds (Attaveera செயல்கள்) of Lord Shiva, the central figure of Saivism, and the Attaveerattanam temples revered as the sites where these events occurred, through historical, literary, and philosophical lenses. This paper establishes that the eight heroic acts performed by Lord Shiva are not merely acts of destruction; rather, they are manifestations of 'Marakkarunai' (Stern Grace/Valorous Compassion) intended to remove the three impurities (Mummalam: Ego, Karma, and Illusion) of souls and purify the spirit. The article deeply analyzes how these deeds are depicted in the hymns of the three primary Devaram saints and how they relate to the Saiva Siddhanta doctrine of 'Pati-Pasu-Pasam' (The Three Realities). Furthermore, historical data obtained through the architectural excellence of these temples, bronze icons, and epigraphical evidence are tabulated and explained.
