Abstract
This article examines the Kodappu, a traditional structure found in the lives of the Ayar community, as a continuation of the Mullai landscape lifestyle of the Sangam period, where people lived in close harmony with nature. The Ayars, whose primary occupation is cattle rearing, lead a semi-nomadic life and construct the Kodappu as a temporary shelter and as a protective enclosure for their livestock. Built using natural materials such as nochchi sticks, bamboo, palm leaves, and fibers, the structure is created through processes like frame bending, leaf weaving, and rope tying. The circular design, the calculation involved in arranging the poles, and the traditional timing followed in cutting materials reflect the Ayars’ indigenous technological knowledge and experiential skills. Thus, the Kodappu stands not only as a functional structure supporting their livelihood but also as an important cultural symbol representing the continuity of Sangam-age Mullai traditions and traditional craft knowledge.
