The internal (akam) and external (puṟam) lives of ancient Tamil Scholars are intricately documented in the Sangam literary works, Eṭṭuthokai (The Eight Anthologies) and Pattuppāṭṭu (The Ten Songs). Among these, the interior-themed texts of Ettuthokai effectively convey the diverse emotional states of love and the perspectives of a variety of characters within established linguistic frameworks. Optative verbs (viyaṅkōḷ vinaimuttṟu) are frequently employed in Sangam literature to communicate the characters' four primary internal emotions and expressions: blessing (vāḻttal), scolding (vaital), requesting (vēṇḍutal), and commanding (vitittal). This research paper focuses on the specific optative verb "peruga" (may you receive/attain) as it is used in the core Ettuthokai love anthologies: Natrinai (natṟṟiṇai), Kurunthokai (kuṟuntokai), Aingurunooru (Aiṅkuṟunūṟu) and Akananooru (akanāṉūṟu). This study endeavors to examine the semantic shifts and unique contextual meanings of this word in relation to the changing landscapes (tiṇai) and the utterances of the characters, from both grammatical and literary perspectives.
