The personality traits of the Sangam-era heroine as revealed through the Ettuthogai anthology

Abstract

Personality is not a trait exclusive to men; it is a quality possessed by women as well. The ability to initiate a task and bring it to a successful conclusion is a distinct aspect of the female personality—a trait women have embodied since the Sangam era. An exemplary female leader strives for success in all her endeavors. Sangam literature, specifically the Ettuthogai (The Eight Anthologies), beautifully portrays the numerous successes achieved by women of that period. This research paper examines and elucidates the multifaceted personality of the Sangam woman through the Ettuthogai—highlighting her traits across various contexts: from the successful realization of marital goals to the pursuit of personal objectives, and demonstrating qualities such as courage, innate instincts, the capacity for cooperation, steadfast adherence to principles, communication skills, and the ability to articulate emotions.
