'The Devotee Who Cried and Reached the Feet': Path of Devotion and Saiva Siddhanta Values in Manikkavasagar's Thiruvasagam

Abstract

This study comprehensively analyzes the lifestyle of Manikkavasagar, one of the four great Saiva saints, and the Saiva Siddhanta doctrines and their socio-scientific impacts embedded in his devotional works, Thiruvasagam and Thirukkovaiyar. The article highlights Manikkavasagar's contribution in establishing the supremacy of Saivism during the religious climate of the 9th century, particularly when Jainism and Buddhism were influential. His unique path of devotion, revered as that of the "devotee who cried and reached the feet," his method of attaining God as a wisdom-guru, and historical data regarding the spiritual turning points that occurred at Thirupperunthurai are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the article reveals the scientific dimension of devotional literature by comparing the 'Andappahuthi' and 'Potri Thiruahaval' sections of Thiruvasagam with modern concepts of Astrophysics and Embryology. A detailed analysis has been conducted on how the three truths of Saiva Siddhanta—Pati (God), Pasu (Soul), and Pasam (Bondage)—are explained simply yet profoundly in Manikkavasagar's songs.
